Woman in a crystal ball with stars on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A woman with curled hair is shown inside a large dark sphere on a grey fringed pedestal, with black star shapes arranged around the top. The shading is bold and solid in black and grey, with smooth grey gradients on the pedestal and a red wash behind the sphere. A small orange jack-o'-lantern with a black cat on top sits partly visible at the left edge, and the composition is centred on the lower leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Madame Orla had kept the glass ball on the same grey pedestal since the year the pier burned, and in all that time nobody had asked her what sat curled inside it. Ivy Marsh asked on a wet October Thursday, when the fairground was shuttered and the tin stars nailed above the booth had begun to rust.

"She's not a fortune," Orla said, wiping the sphere with the hem of her shawl. "She's a debt."

Ivy leaned closer. Inside the dark glass a woman folded her knees to her chin, hair coiling around her like smoke, one arm stretched out as though feeling for a window that wasn't there. The red cloth behind the ball glowed in the lamplight the way it always did before rain.

"Who owes?" Ivy asked.

"The one who looked too long." Orla set a carved pumpkin on the counter, its grin flickering, and a black cat leapt from the shelf onto it as if it had been waiting. "Every seer owes a sister. Her name was Marisol. She traded her turn for one true answer, and the glass kept the rest."

Ivy thought of the question she had come to ask about her brother's ship and found she no longer wanted the answer. She touched the cold curve of the glass. Something inside uncurled, slow as a tide, and for a moment a pale hand pressed flat against the other side, then the lantern guttered and the ball was only dark.
