Sit nearer the bench, all of you, because the rain is coming in off the allotments and I'll not shout this twice. You want the snake story? Well, it isn't about a snake, not properly. It's about the wire that ran the length of Mrs Ashdown's runner beans, the one she called the line, and the boy who was sent to coil it up before the frost.

Thomas Gathercole was eleven that autumn and idle with it. He left the line where it lay in the wet grass, a black thread curling between the cabbages, and when the old woman came out with her lantern she found it had moved. It had gone under the gate and across the path in long easy loops, the way a river goes when nobody is watching it, and she said nothing to the boy except that he would be the one to walk it home in the dark.
He did. He followed the squiggle of it through the nettles to the pond behind the church, where the line simply went down into the water and did not come up again. Thomas stood there with the lantern shaking, and he swore, to me and to his mother and to God, that he felt a tug at his little finger as if something on the far side had taken hold of the same length of cord.
Come on, the rain's worse now. Mrs Ashdown never got her line back. She said the pond had kept the better half of it, and that every gardener in this parish owes a bit of wire to the water, sooner or later. Thomas wore a mark on his finger till the day he died, a wiggle of ink like the line in the grass. I'll leave you to decide whether it was ink, or only the shape of the thing that had hold of him.
