By the third week of drought the hedges had gone to wire, and you were the only one still carrying a watering can down the walled garden after dark. Nobody who lived at Coldharbour cared for the place any more. The paths were gravel in some spots and moss in others, and the old sundial had lost its gnomon to a winter storm years ago.

The owl lived in the medlar by the gate. You never saw her in daylight. At dusk she came down onto the rim of the fountain basin, her wide eyes gold and fixed, her ear tufts laid flat like fern fronds. Every night you filled the can, and every night she watched you do it and said nothing, which you took for permission.

On the ninth night she spoke, her voice as dry as a seed head. She asked you to stop counting the leaves on the rosebushes, because every leaf you counted was one the roses had to grow back, and they were tired. You laughed and said you weren't counting anything. She tipped her head and showed you the pale ring of paisley on her breast, curling inward like a question, and you understood she had been counting too.

The rain came on the twelfth day. By morning the lotus bed at the centre of the garden had opened its first bloom, and in the wet gravel beneath the medlar you found a single feather with a sprig of leaves drawn along its shaft.
