A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the bearings written in her father's hand on the back of a seed invoice: north-east by a quarter east, twelve paces, then the tree with the split trunk. She stood at the bottom of Long Orchard with the sun sliding off the Malvern hills and wasps drunk on windfalls, and she tried to make the paper agree with the land. The rows ran where they had always run. The split tree was there, leaning like someone listening at a door.

Her father had planted the orchard with a compass in his breast pocket and never once trusted a fence post to tell him where he was. Every autumn he walked the boundary with her, lifting the dog-eared chart from the kitchen dresser and tapping the rose printed in its corner. "Everything out here has a direction," he used to say, "even the lost bits."

She found the second note tucked inside the tin where he kept the grafting wax. It was only a line, pencilled and smudged: Not all who wander. He had never finished it. Beneath it, in a different pencil, a small arrow pointed past the edge of the sheet, past the hedge, past the last apple row toward the ridge where the cider press had rusted to the colour of old brick.

She folded the invoice into her palm and set off along the bearing, counting her paces aloud the way he had taught her. At twelve she stopped, and at the split tree she turned, and through a gap in the hedge she saw the whole valley laid out below in low gold light, every row lined up true. She understood then that he had never been lost at all. He had only been walking the long way home.
