Notepad tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A spiral-bound notepad is drawn in black outline with a small circle near the top and faint blue-grey ruled lines filling the page. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink looks softened with age. The tattoo sits centred on the inner wrist, with the palm and fingers of the hand filling the upper part of a plain white background.

The list had been on the wrist for eleven years, and Pauline still hadn't finished it. She sat on the bottom step of the stairwell in Hollins Tower with the lift out of order again and read it over, the way she read the Sunday paper, from the corner. Bread. Gas meter, ring Mr Okafor. Tell Dev about the damp. Under that, in her own hand from a biro that had nearly died, someone else's words: Don't forget the bins are Thursday, not Friday, which she'd written for her son the summer he moved to Leeds and had never once been able to cross off.

Flats three floors up had begun to hum, a radio or a kettle, and somewhere a child was practising the same four bars on a recorder. Pauline turned her wrist to the strip light. The ink had gone soft and blue at the edges, the ruled lines barely there, the little circle at the top gone the colour of weak tea. Her sister had talked her into it at a seaside fair, and at the time it had seemed like the funniest thing in the world, a notepad for a woman who never wrote anything down.

She thought about the tower's residents' meeting on Monday, where she was supposed to stand up and say something about the lift. She had a list of that too, on the back of an envelope in her coat pocket. Her wrist had nothing new to add. She took the pen from behind her ear, uncapped it, and wrote lift, in small capitals, just under Dev and the damp, then pressed the cap back on and climbed the stairs.
