Acoustic guitar on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A man's forearm shows a black and grey tattoo of an acoustic guitar, running from the wrist towards the elbow. The neck, frets, strings, sound hole and body are drawn in clean dark outlines with solid black fills and light grey tones. The plain white background and grey shirt sleeve keep the focus on the tattoo.

The king of Harrowmere had three daughters and no ear for music, a lack he bore the way other men bear a bad knee. So when the carpenter's boy came up the hill road with a spruce box under one arm and a neck of dark ebony across his back, the gate guards let him through only because he looked too thin to be trouble.

He sat on the throne room steps, turned the pegs with his thumb until six strings settled into one long note, and played. The court laughed at first. The king did not. Every trumpet in the realm had come to him, and every harp from the southern islands, but none had made the flagstones seem to breathe. The round dark mouth in the front of the box seemed to swallow the lamplight and give it back warm.
"Name your price," said the king. The boy shook his head. "Then play it every night," said the king, "and I will hang the bells in the east tower for you." The boy played every night for a month, and the king grew restless. He wanted the sound kept for himself, so he had the boy locked in the east tower with the box and a candle, and told him to play until the notes ran out of him like water from a cracked jug.
Forty days later the guards heard nothing from the tower. On the forty-first morning the king climbed the stairs himself and found the room empty, the candle burned to a stub, and the box sitting open on the sill. Its sound hole faced the courtyard. When the wind came through the window, a low note rolled down the stone walls and out over the sleeping town, and the king's daughters, one by one, woke up humming it.
