Fine line arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow tattoo runs horizontally across the inner forearm, with a fletched tail on the left, a thin shaft, a cross-shaped mark near the centre and an arrowhead pointing right. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The forearm is shown in soft natural light against a grey sleeve and a blurred warm background.

The barge had been stuck on the sandbank below Halse Lock since Lammas, and the bargemen had stopped arguing about it. Old Mab Tallow said the river wanted a toll and would have one. Her grandson Ned said it wanted dredging. Neither of them could shift the hull with a pole.

It was Ned's sister, Ruth, who took the bow down from the hook above the hearth. She had been shooting at the willows since she was six, and nobody had ever told her a shaft could not carry a message. She cut a length of ash, fletched it with three grey feathers from the hen coop, and tied a strip of red wool to the nock. Then she walked the towpath to the bend and loosed it upstream, where the water ran deep and black under the alders.
The arrow fell short in the reeds, but Ruth had cut a cross into the bank where it landed, and she told the men the channel lay on the far side of that mark. They poled the barge a yard east of it and felt the keel lift free.
Mab said nothing at the time. That winter she sat by the stove with the bow across her knees, watching the red wool that still hung from the reeds, and when the ice came she would not let anyone take it down.
