Traditional style tattoo of clouds, a red sun and a banner reading NOTHING BUT THE RAIN, shown across two panels.

Nothing but the rain banner with clouds and sun

Traditional · Mixed · Photo

A traditional style tattoo shows a red sun partly behind clouds with rain lines, a dark grey shape in the centre, and a banner reading NOTHING BUT THE RAIN. The linework is bold and black, with grey shading and small red accents on the sun and banner. The image is split into two panels by dark vertical bars, and the design continues from one panel to the other.

Dear Tom,

Your van is still sitting under the lean-to where you left it, though Dad has started talking about selling it for scrap, which I've told him you'd never allow. The rain hasn't stopped since Boxing Day. Every morning the yard is a lake the colour of stewed tea, and the ewes stand in the gateway looking at me as if I owe them an explanation.

The Hendersons' boy came up on Tuesday asking whether you'd been to Carlisle. I said you'd sent a postcard of a sunset from somewhere with palm trees, which was a lie, and he said that was a shame, because his mother had heard you'd gone off with a fellow from the mart and nothing but the rain on your windscreen. I didn't know what he meant. I still don't. Mum laughed for the first time in weeks and then went quiet again.

Here is what I have. The sun came out for ten minutes yesterday over the top field, low and red like a coin left in the sink, and I stood at the gate with the fork and watched it slide behind the cloud again. The back road is under water at the bridge, so I took the Land Rover round by the quarry and got stuck twice. Nobody came to pull me out. I got myself out with a plank and a good deal of swearing.

Write when you can. Tell me the rain stops somewhere. Tell me you're not sleeping in that van.

Your sister, Ruth
