Haunted house and tombstones on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows a haunted house with glowing yellow eyes in its upper windows, a full moon and a bare tree beside it. Tombstones and scroll banners across the lower part of the arm carry dates and titles, and the banners contain partial sentences. The work uses fine grey shading and soft tonal gradients, with no colour ink, and it fills the upper arm in a dense, layered composition.

The last northbound left Harrow Cross at twenty past nine, and in nineteen years of keeping the signal box I had never once seen anyone step off it. From the platform you could see the house on Gallow Rise if you leaned over the cast-iron rail. Its upper windows caught the station lamps the way a cat's eyes catch a torch, and every October the publican's wife swore they blinked.

Old Pargeter, the stationmaster before me, kept a ledger of the town's dead. Not the ones the churchyard counted, but the ones the town itself forgot: the mill foreman, the two quarry boys, the widow who walked to the level crossing each evening with her gloves on. He wrote the dates in pencil on the backs of spare timetables. When I asked him why, he said a place that forgets its dead ends up with the houses doing the remembering.
I found the ledger in the bottom drawer the week the moon went full over the Rise. The pencil had faded to silver, but the last entry was in a careful copperplate I did not recognise. It was my name, and tomorrow's date, and beneath it someone had written that the hill kept what it was given and the moon sat over it like a widow over a letter she would not open.
The 9:20 came in on time that night, its lamps swinging across the platform. I had my coat buttoned and my ticket in my pocket, but when the guard raised his flag I found I had walked back into the signal box instead and pulled the lever myself. In the glass, my reflection looked out over the valley, and behind it, in the upper windows of the house, two yellow lights opened like eyes and turned toward the line.
