City street scene across a torso
Other · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo covers the torso and shows a busy city street viewed from above, with a crossroads at the centre and traffic lights, buildings and a skyscraper. Shop signs such as Staples, Superman and The Hut are drawn in soft, shaded lines with grey tones across most of the design. Warm red and orange tones appear on the left side, while the centre and right side are mostly grey, and a navel piercing sits at the bottom of the frame.

Dorrie Mensah had painted shop fascias on Calder Cross for twenty-six years, and when the council sent its letter she went up the office block on the north corner with a flask and a roll of tracing paper. From the sixth floor the junction looked like something drawn on a board. Four roads met under a single set of lights, and every corner had a sign she knew by its lettering before she could read it: the stationers with its blue awning, the pie shop with the cracked hatch, the comic shop whose Superman had lost an arm in a storm in 1998.

She spent three days up there tracing. Her brother Tomas, who had timed those lights for the council before his knees went, rang every evening to ask how she was getting on. "They changed the green to suit the lunchtime queue at the pie shop," he told her. "Every green was a favour to somebody."
On the last morning the hoarding went up around the empty lot where the bank had stood, and Dorrie painted the whole crossing on it in grey and rust, the way it looked from the roof. She left one square in the middle blank, because she could not remember what had been on that corner before the bank.
A girl of about seven stood in front of it with a melting ice lolly, reading the signs out loud. When she reached the blank square she turned round and said, "That's where the fish shop goes," and walked off before Dorrie could ask her how she knew.
