Now I'm a warrior script tattoo

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a fine script tattoo reading now I'm a warrior, running across the skin in a single line. Two or three fingers with black nail polish rest at the top of the frame, and soft shading on the skin gives the image a monochrome, close-up feel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass had shut twice that week, and Mam still wouldn't let me cross it alone. I told her the mules knew the way better than either of us. She said mules couldn't read, so they had no business carrying letters. I had this one inside my coat, flat against my ribs where the sleet couldn't reach it, and I kept one hand on it past the last cairn.

Dai had written it on the back of a feed sack in pencil, the letters leaning uphill as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere. Four words and his initial, nothing about the lower sheds or the storm that had caught him there, nothing about whether he was eating. Just now I'm a warrior, as though he had been waiting all winter to say it and had finally found the nerve.

Near the summit the snow had blown clean off the rock and the wind came from every side at once. I stopped in the lee of a boulder and read it again, and I thought about what a man could mean by that, out on a mountain with nobody to tell. Then I took a stick of charcoal from my pocket and wrote the words on the flat stone beside me, in my own hand, the loops small and tidy, so that whoever came up after would know someone had got this far.

Going down was easier. Mam was waiting at the gate with the lamp lit, and I handed her the sack without a word. She read it under the light, her mouth working, then folded it twice and tucked it into her apron, and said only that the kettle was on.
