Octopus tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed octopus sits on the forearm, with its head near the elbow and tentacles curling down and across toward the wrist. The shading is soft and layered in greys, with fine linework defining the suckers and skin folds. The arm rests against a gold wall with a black botanical print, and a clenched fist sits at the right of the frame.

The ink on the harbour ledger had gone soft with damp by the time the octopus came up through the sluice gate, and nobody in Vell could agree afterwards whether it had been trapped or had simply grown tired of the dark water. You were the one sent down with the lamp and the copper pins, because the Court Naturalist said your hands were steady and your opinions were not, and she needed the animal drawn alive before the tide turned it to paste.

It did not look at you the way the fishwives said fish looked. Its eye was the colour of wet slate, and it considered the lamp, then the pins, then your wrist, with a patience that felt like being weighed. When you laid the paper on the flagstones it stretched one arm across the margin, slow as a clerk smoothing a document, and each sucker pressed a faint grey ring into the page. Where its arms crossed the black leaves of the botanical print the Naturalist had hung in her study, the creature paused, as if it recognised a pattern it had seen in some other sea.
By the time the lamp guttered, the sheet was no longer a drawing of an octopus. It was a map of every place the animal had touched, a tangle of rings and folds that the Naturalist pinned above her desk and called the finest record of the coast the kingdom had ever made.
You never told her that the last curl of the arm had followed the line of your wrist before it let go, neat as a signature, and that you kept the stained pen for yourself.
