Fine line vine flourish across the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A delicate tattoo of a swirling vine with small leaf shapes and a dotted trail runs across the back of the hand towards the wrist. The linework is thin and mostly single-line, with a few curls and dots, and the ink appears dark grey to black. The pale skin and plain white background keep the focus on the design, which is shown from a straight-on angle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had promised the hem by Friday, and by Wednesday the ivy had found the kitchen window again. She stood on the step with the snips in one hand and a cup of tea going cold in the other, watching a tendril pull itself along the sill as if it had somewhere to be. Upstairs, her sister Bea was trying on shoes that pinched, shouting down about whether the veil was too long, and the whole village seemed to be talking about the wedding at the chapel on Saturday.

Their gran had taught them both to mark a hem with a dotted line of running stitches so the seamstress never lost her place. Nell had never liked the trick. It looked like a path to nowhere. But kneeling on the flagstones with the dress across her knees, she found herself following the little dots from one cuff to the other, the way Gran's needle used to go, curling round each pleat as if the cloth were a vine that needed training.

Bea came down at noon, barefoot, and sat on the bottom step to watch. "You're doing it wrong," she said, and then, more quietly, "Gran would have liked the ivy." Nell didn't answer. She finished the last curl at the cuff, bit the thread, and held the hem up to the light.

Outside, the ivy had already crept over the snips she'd left on the step, twisting round the handles as though they belonged to it. Nell left them there. On Saturday Bea would walk up the aisle with the hem falling exactly where it should, and nobody would ever see the dots.
