Black and grey rose cluster on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of roses with full, shaded petals, leaves and buds climbs diagonally across the outer forearm. The tattoo uses soft grey shading and darker accents for depth, with no colour ink. The photograph is taken against a plain pale yellow wall, with the person's hand extended and a jeans and dark top visible at the right edge.

The carter's wife counted the dead cactus twice before she noticed the rose. It grew at the foot of the Tallow Wash, where the road gave up and became a rut, and it was the colour of pencilled smoke, each petal folded over the next like a held breath. Her husband Tobiah swore it was a trick of the dust. She took a cutting anyway, wrapped in wet sacking, and rode the mule the rest of the way to Calder Hollow.

In Calder Hollow there was a well that had been dry for eleven summers. People came to it with buckets and went home with nothing, because the old men said the water would rise for whoever named what the well was waiting for. Nobody had named it. The carter's wife planted the cutting beside the trough and sat with it through two nights, saying over the names of everyone she had buried on the Tallow road, one at a time, the way you might count out coins.
On the third morning a boy from the tannery came running with his shirt torn at the shoulder. He had been crossing the pan when the ground gave under him, and he said he had seen a light down there the colour of rain. The men dug. They found the spring under a bed of blue clay, and the water came up so cold the children screamed, and the rose, which had not put out a single leaf more, opened one petal wider than the rest.
Tobiah never admitted the dust had been anything but dust. But every spring after, somebody in Calder Hollow tied a strip of grey cloth to the trough, and the old women said the rose kept its bud closed for anyone still owed a name.
