Small mountain line tattoo on an inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a jagged mountain ridge sits on the inner forearm of a person wearing a grey polka-dot hoodie. The linework is thin and unshaded, with a simple outline and no fill. The blue trousers and dark background create strong colour contrast, and the hands are clasped low in the frame.

The ridge had taken Nell three weeks to draw, and Tanner, the chief draughtsman, took it off her in one afternoon. She was to stop counting the teeth.

She went out to the hills the next morning with a flask and a pencil stub and sat on a wet wall above the reservoir, drawing only what the light allowed. A jagged run of summits rose out of the mist, and each time she lost one she found it again further along, lower, as if the range were walking away from her. By noon her fingers were blue. She understood then that the line was not the rock at all but the moment the eye agreed to stop.

When she came back, the office had moved on to tithe maps and nobody asked about the ridge. Tanner had pinned her sheet above his bench anyway. Beneath her line he had written the date in ink, in his square hand, and one word: Stay.

Years later, when the office had gone to the county council and the bench had been sold for firewood, she found the sheet folded inside a survey manual. The ink had faded to the colour of weak tea. She traced the ridge with one finger, then walked up the lane at dusk, past the reservoir, and sat on the same wall until the peaks went dark and the line was the last thing she could still see.
