Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A coloured flash design showing a skull at the lower left, a fan of four playing cards (7, 8, 8 and ace of spades) at the centre, and three dice along the bottom. Bold black outlines, red splatter and warm yellow and tan tones fill the composition on a textured parchment background.

Nobody on the eighth floor of Ashgrove House played cards after dark, not since the lift had been out for a month. But on Thursdays Ray Dunmore unfolded a table between the bins and the fire door, and the lads climbed the stairs anyway, because Ray dealt straight and paid out in cash.

Tonight it was Ray against Kofi, who was seventeen and certain he could read a face. He had watched Ray's hands for three weeks. Ray turned the cards one at a time: a seven, then an eight, then another eight, and the ace of spades last, laid down like a full stop. Kofi's jaw went tight. Three dice sat in a cup at the edge of the table, and nobody touched them. The brass knuckles Ray used as a paperweight caught the strip light and threw it back at the ceiling.

"Two eights, a seven and a spade," Ray said. "Your nan could have told you that's not a winning hand."

"It's a hand."

"It's a hand that makes people stay at the table." Ray gathered the cards into a neat stack and slid the ace off the top. He pushed it across the metal to Kofi. "Keep that. Don't keep the money."

Kofi went down the stairs in the dark, counting the landings with his fingers on the rail, the ace of spades tucked inside his coat. On the fourth floor he stopped and took it out to check it was real, and found it was, and then he could not work out whether Ray had won or had simply let him go.
