Playing card suits tattoo design sheet

Mixed · Flash

A white sheet holds twelve identical clusters of playing card suits: a red heart and red diamond with black club and black spade. The shapes are solid, flat fills with crisp edges and no shading or fine linework. The clusters sit in a regular grid of three columns and four rows, evenly spaced on the page.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had stopped by the time Ada Pell came down the lane with the lantern. The three heifers were already standing in a ring round the old well, as if someone had told them to wait. Her father had lost them at cards the week before, four cards turned face down on the kitchen table, and the Squire's man had come to collect them at first light.

Ada did not argue. She set her lantern on the well kerb and asked the man to deal. He dealt from a pack so old the corners had gone soft as bread, and every card bore the same four marks: a red heart and a black club, a black spade and a red diamond, set close together like a family round a table. 'Nobody plays with one suit,' she said. 'Nobody wins with one either.'

They played until the lantern guttered. Each time he took a trick she turned a card and found the same four marks standing the other way round, so the suits kept trading places but none of them ever went missing. When the last card fell, the heifers had wandered over to her side of the well, and the man was on his knees brushing frost from the rim, looking for a marker he had dropped.

In spring the heifers calved in the top field. Her father never asked how she had done it, and she never told him. But the old pack still sat in its box on the dresser, and whenever the snow came down heavy she would lay out four cards and count the marks, the way you count your own people after a long night.
