Gramophone with swirling ink patterns

Black and grey · Flash

A gramophone with a large horn is drawn in black ink on cream paper. The horn and the wooden box are filled with paisley-like motifs, scrolls, scallops and zigzag bands. Curling swirls, leaf-shaped forms and small circles rise from the horn across the upper right of the page.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gramophone was already playing when the seven-fifteen slid into Harrowgate Road, a cracked waltz pushing out of its horn and up past the signal box. Mrs Ivy Marr had set it on the bench by the ticket hatch the way other women set out a tea urn, and nobody on the platform thought to ask her to stop.

Her husband Walter had worked the points here for thirty-one years. He painted the horn himself the winter before the line was electrified, black ink on the brass in curls and little scalloped bands, and he said music should come out looking the way it sounds. When I asked why she still brought it out on wet Tuesdays, she wound the handle twice and said the trains were less lonely with something to listen to.

I had the lost property key that year and a box of umbrellas nobody had claimed. On the last Tuesday of October the waltz ran out halfway through a bar, and the platform went quiet except for the wheels. Mrs Marr lifted the needle, folded her gloves over the horn and tapped the scrollwork twice, like someone knocking on a door they expected to open. Then she pressed a sheet of cream paper into my hand, its corners soft from handling, with a single inked leaf curling off the edge.

I still have it. It sits in the drawer under the lost property ledger, and every time the 7.15 comes in I hear the waltz start up again somewhere behind the signal box.
