Looped fine line ornament design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single continuous black line forms a vertical ornament of loops, coils and a spiral, with small dots at the top and bottom. The linework is thin and even, with no shading. The design is centred on a plain white background with generous margins.

You are eleven the summer the wind off the estuary stops being something you can plan around, and your grandfather Albert sits on the sea wall at Haddon Bay with a tin of hanks on his knee. He says the string is the only honest part of any kite. He won't let you touch the reel yet. He hands you the end of the twine and tells you to pay it out slowly, the way Mrs Pryce pays out stamps across the counter, so nothing snags on the rail.

The town talks about the Pender boy, who lost his kite in the gorse last spring and cried in front of the chapel. Your grandfather never lost one. He ties every knot twice and he has told you that a line never breaks where you expect it to. It breaks at the knot somebody was too proud to check, and you spend the afternoon checking yours until your thumbs are grey with tar and the gulls have given up on you.
Then the wind swings round to the north-east and the kite climbs past the spire, and the string begins to hum like a wire strung between two poles. You wind him in by hand, looping the slack over your elbow, the coils stacking on the wall in a long run of figures that look like something a clerk might have written without once lifting his pen. The paper kite comes down out of the glare as a small dark dot above the harbour lights.
At the last loop there is a knot, tight as a full stop. Albert takes the end from you, runs it through his fingers, and nods. "Now you know where it starts and where it stops," he says, and he doesn't say anything else, and your palms keep stinging long after the lamps come on along the quay.
