Om symbol and lotus on the lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a fine line tattoo on bare skin of the back, showing an Om symbol with a crescent and dot above it. A lotus flower with pointed petals sits beneath the Om, with a curled stroke tapering below it. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, centred on a warm, softly lit background.

The rain had been coming through the glass roof of Hartley Arcade since seven, dripping into the tin buckets we'd set between the stalls, and by ten the buckets were singing in different keys. Dad always said you could tell a wet market by its sound. I sold brass bowls and joss sticks from the corner pitch, under a tarpaulin that sagged like a hammock.

On the Saturday the lad came in, hood up, trainers squelching, and stood over the little hand bells on the velvet tray. He had two pound coins folded in a sandwich bag. I asked what they were for. He said his gran used to hum a long sound when she pegged out the washing, a sound with three parts to it, and he couldn't remember how it went. He wanted a bell that could make it.
I told him what Dad told me: the sound starts low in the belly, rises up through the throat, and ends in a hush at the lips, like water going quiet over stones. Then I rang the bell, one small clear note, and he laughed because the rain on the roof seemed to fall into the same pitch. I wrapped the bell in tissue and pushed his coins back into his palm.
He walked out into the wet. By noon the lotus-patterned bowls had gone from the tray and the tarpaulin had stopped dripping, but I kept hearing the bell's last hum under the iron roof, rising like something that had come up through mud to open. Dad would have called that a sale.
