It sat in its tin tub beside the boiler pipes, a pale cup of leaves that opened only when the glass was warm enough, which in February meant rarely.

The morning the letter came, she found the tub's water gone green and the root gone soft. She knelt on the duckboards with a jam jar of clean water and the trowel she had owned since her husband's allotment days, and she worked the black mud loose with her fingers. Under it the stem was still firm. Something in her wanted to call that a sign, but she had spent too long among plants to trust signs. Plants simply went on, or they didn't.

Her grandson Kwame came in at eleven with a flask and a roll of perforated tape the café next door had asked him to fetch, which was the only reason he had stopped at all. He watched her lift the tub onto a stool in the sun. 'It's not dead,' she said, before he could ask. 'It's waiting for us to stop fussing.'

They sat on the warm pipe until the light slid off the water. Nothing opened. At half past three a single leaf unfurled at the edge, slow as a dropped letter reaching the floor, and Dorothy wrote the date on the back of the council's envelope, where it would not be read.
