Om symbol design with dots and teardrops
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of an Om symbol, with its curved strokes tapering at the ends, centred on a white background. A vertical line of three dots and a teardrop shape sits above and below the symbol, mirroring it. The linework is uniform black with no shading or colour, and the design is shown flat and symmetrical.

Dear Ruth, the last train has gone and I am sitting in the lost property cupboard with the door propped open for the draught, because Mr Dunn has switched the heaters off until April. I have been sorting umbrellas. There are forty-one of them, which is more than the 6.14 could possibly have carried, so either people are leaving them on purpose or the trains are full of folk who forget the weather.

This afternoon a man came to the counter asking for a grey holdall with a brass clasp. I hadn't got it. He turned his hat round by the brim and told me, quite without fuss, that he had left it on the 4.50 to Carlisle nine years ago and had been meaning to come back for it ever since. Nine years, Ruth. He said it the way you'd mention a dentist appointment. I gave him the form. Under reason for claim he drew a small curl, like the tail of a comma, with a line of dots beneath it. I asked what it was. He said it was the sound an empty carriage makes, if you listen properly.
After he left I went out to platform four and stood under the lamp, where the rain was dripping off the canopy in a steady row, one drop a second. I tried humming with it, low, the way Mother used to at the sink. The drips and my voice came out of step, then together, then apart again. It was almost nothing, and I stood there until the signal changed from red to green for no train at all.
The holdall is on the third shelf now, behind the mop bucket. I haven't opened it. I've left a note on top saying it is ready for collection whenever he likes. Write back soon and tell me what the weather is doing in Whitby.
