Brush ink unalome design

Black and grey · Flash

A single black brush-ink drawing of an unalome symbol, with a tapering line rising to a point, three stacked loops and a thick spiral at the base. The strokes vary in width and show dry-brush texture at the edges of the spiral. The motif sits centred on a plain cream background with no other elements.

Brother Anselm has taken the good ink again, so this letter goes out in the charcoal-grey I mixed from soot and gum, which will smudge if you hold it too long. Forgive it. The road is finished as far as the third bend, and you would not believe how stubbornly the mountain argues with a surveyor.

Above the stone bridge the track doubles back three times, each turn so tight the mules must be led round by hand. I have drawn them as you asked, three loops stacked like the rings of a sleeping dog's coil, and I have marked where the line runs thin at the top, where the pass narrows to the width of a goat. The men call that stretch the Needle. I call it the only honest part of the whole survey.

At the base, where we began, the old well still turns. Ferris tried to fill it with rubble on the first morning, and the water rose through the cracks in a curl that would not be stopped, so we left it and bent our road around it. The sheet I am sending shows the path curling in on itself there. I have shaded the edges dry because the stone was rough and the brush would not lie flat.

Last night I walked the full route alone with a lamp. At the top of the Needle I stopped and looked back down, and the whole road had folded into one shape I could hold in my palm. I do not know whether that is wisdom or only tiredness. Come up in spring and tell me which.
