Om symbol with dotted line design
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a stylised Om symbol in bold black ink, with a curled upper loop and a sweeping lower stroke. A teardrop and crescent sit above it, and a smaller teardrop with dots sits below, all centred on a vertical line. The linework varies in thickness on plain white paper with no shading or colour.

She drew slowly, tongue between her teeth, while the fire spat. A small teardrop first, then a crescent like a lid over it, then a great looping sign that curled off to the right like a wave that had thought better of breaking. Beneath it she set a lower teardrop and a column of dots running down to the table. When I hovered with the coffee pot, she tapped the dots and said they were the way back down the mountain once the thaw came.
I asked what the sign meant. She said it was the sound a bell makes after the bell has stopped, and that her grandmother had taught her to hold it in the mouth before sleep. I did not believe her, and she did not mind. In the morning the road was open, the coach left at seven, and the bill of fare was gone from the table. Only the dots remained, pricked into the frost on the inside of the window, a line of tiny holes leading out past the lintel.
