Om symbol with Devanagari script

Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a large Om symbol drawn in a single bold black outline, with a small eye shape inside the curve and a looping tail at the bottom. Two lines of Devanagari script sit to the left of the curve. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the composition is centred on the symbol against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock keeper at Stanley Ferry had passed a hundred barges, but he stopped to read the stern-board of the Marigold, where the painter had finished two words in fresh black on Tuesday. You stood on the gunwale with the windlass and waited while he sounded them out, slowly, the way you had practised on the drive north. Ishwar. Kutumb. He asked what they meant. You said they were the name your grandmother gave the boat, which was true enough to get you through the gate.

The river was low that week, and the water had a brown skin that caught the sky. Your uncle always told you the Om on the tiller-board was meant to be read with the eye half closed, so the curve became a face turned sideways, listening. He had painted the eye himself the year he bought her, a small almond with a grey iris, and he insisted it be the first thing a bargee saw coming round the bend at Castleford. You argued with him about it. You lost.

At the top lock a girl of about nine sat on the beam with a sketchbook, drawing the boat. She showed you the page without being asked. She had copied the Om in one unbroken line, then gone at the letters beside it and got them backwards, the way children do with a language they only half own. You told her the curl at the bottom was exactly right. She asked whether family meant the people on the boat or the people waiting at the end of the canal. You pulled the lever, the gates groaned open, and you did not answer until the bow was through.

Then you told her both, and she wrote it down.
