Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

Three identical lines of black Devanagari script are stacked vertically on the back of the neck, reading shanti. The letterforms are solid, even black ink with clean edges and no visible shading. The image is a close crop with a hand holding dreadlocks above the tattoo and a black cord necklace below, with the skin tone and ink contrast clearly visible.

Sit where I can see you, and keep your hands off that lift button, because the lift in Hadley House has a temper and it remembers who pressed it. Forty years ago, when this block was new and the concrete still smelled of rain, there lived a man on the ninth floor called Tomasz Renner, who fixed the boilers for the whole estate and never once in his life raised his voice.

One February the boiler on the roof broke in a storm, and Tomasz went up the ladder with a torch in his teeth. The wind caught the hatch and slammed it shut behind him. Down in the stairwell the lights went out, and a girl named Priya Dhillon, who was only nine and had gone up to fetch her grandmother's pills, sat on the cold step and started to cry. Tomasz heard her through the vents, the way sound climbs a shaft. He could not climb down. He could not get the hatch open.

So he did what his own mother had done for him in another country, when the bombs fell. He said the word slowly, three times, the way you'd lay three stones across a stream. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti. Peace, peace, peace. The girl, who had never heard the word spoken like that, counted the breaths between them and copied him, and by the third time her crying had gone as quiet as a dropped coin.

When the power came back, Tomasz was sitting on the roof with his back against the chimney, and the girl was asleep on the landing below with her cheek on the step. The caretaker found the word written in chalk on the lift wall the next morning, three lines stacked one above another, and nobody has ever rubbed it off. Press the button now, if you dare, but say it first. That is the trick of it. Mind the doors.
