Traditional style tattoo of an open book with two red roses and the words We're all stories in the end, on the ankle.

Open book and roses on an ankle

Traditional · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

An open book with grey shaded pages and a red bookmark sits at the centre, flanked by two red roses with dark green leaves. The words WE'RE ALL STORIES IN THE END curve above and below the book in black lettering. Bold black outlines and solid fills give a flat, graphic finish, with a partial floral tattoo visible on the other foot at the right edge.

You knead the last batch at half four, when the window above the sink is still black and the only light comes from the oven dial. Your aunt ran this bakery for thirty-one years, and her battered paperback still sits on the shelf above the flour bins, its spine gone soft as cloth. A red ribbon hangs out of it at a page she never reached.

The first customers come at six, the way they always do: Mr Okafor for his two cobs, the nurse from the Royal Infirmary with her coffee going cold in its paper cup, the boy who buys one currant bun and pays in coins he has counted twice. You talk about the weather and the football and nothing that matters. Between sales you turn the pages with floury fingers, leaving small grey prints on the margins she would have scolded you for.

On the last Thursday of the month you find a folded slip tucked into the back cover. Her handwriting loops and leans the way it did on the price tags. Start at the ribbon, it says. Bake the bread first. The rest will keep.

You lock the door at noon, sit on a flour sack with the book open across your knees, and read the rest of the page aloud to nobody. Outside, a bus sighs at the stop. The loaves cool on the rack behind you, and for once the page is the warmest thing in the room.
