Open book on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph is a close crop of a woman's upper chest and shoulder, with only her lips and chin visible at the top of the frame. A small open book is drawn in thin black linework with light grey shading on the pages and cover. The skin sits against a red patterned jumper, with a blurred bookshelf of coloured spines in the background.

Ada Penrose had driven the mobile library van for twenty-two years, and she knew which fishermen in Porthlow read by lamplight and which only pretended to. When the cold snap closed the harbour road she packed the van anyway. The boats sat tied along the quay, their hulls knocking against the tyres, and the gulls had given up on the chips and gone to sit on the chapel roof.

Her last stop was the net loft behind the fish market, where Tom Keverne had been waiting since Michaelmas for a book on knots she had ordered from Penzance. He took it with fingers stained orange from the twine, turned to the diagram of a bowline, and frowned. "They've drawn it wrong," he said. "The rabbit comes out the wrong side of the tree."
Ada looked. He was right. She pulled a pencil from the bun in her hair and corrected the page in the margin, a small clean sketch of the loop. Then, because it seemed a shame to waste the moment, she drew the book itself lying open on the bench between them, its pages lifted like the wings of something about to leave.
In March the van came back with the new stock, and Tom was at the loft door before she had the engine off. He held up the old copy, its margins dense with her pencil, and for once had no complaint to make about the knots.
