The gale took the washing line down on Tuesday, along with the blue hat you left on the peg by the back door, so I hope you've forgiven me for not chasing it past the dyke. Mr Tulloch found it caught in the gorse above Hag Cove and carried it up to the shop with a face on him as if it had come off a broomstick. It's dry now, and it sits on the windowsill where the harbour light comes through the old glass.

You'll think I'm soft, but I keep thinking about the summer you cut the brim out of that felt with the kitchen scissors and swore it would be a proper witch's hat by the autumn fair. You never finished it. The point went soft after the first rain and you stuffed it with newspaper. I kept the newspaper. It was the ferry timetable from 1983, which tells you how long I've been meaning to clear out the drawers.

The boat came in this morning with the post and two new teachers for the school, both wearing wool coats far too thin for the wind. One of them asked whether the island had a tradition of hats. I told her we had a tradition of losing them, and she laughed, and I liked her for it. Come home at Easter if the crossing is calm. Bring the good scissors.
