Open book with birds in flight on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

An open book with thick, shaded pages sits at the base of the design, and its upper pages rise into a line of stylised birds in flight. The birds are drawn with bold outlines and soft grey shading, with the smallest birds fading toward the top edge of the arm. The image is a close, front-on photograph in warm, even light against a dark background.

Dear Thessaly, the third quire went out of the window this morning, and I have not yet found the courage to tell Master Anaxo. You will laugh, but the pages lifted on their own. I was binding the last gathering of the Tale of the Salt Merchant when the sheets began to stir against the thread, as if someone were breathing beneath them. I held on to the spine. Then the leaves parted like wings and the whole book rose off the bench, shedding ink in small grey smudges that became birds.

They went up through the smoke from the reed roofs, three at first, then five, the smallest so faint I could only follow them by the shadow they cast on the plaster. The book stayed in my hands, a husk with its covers still stitched and nothing left inside but blank vellum and the smell of cedar oil. Anaxo says a scribe who loses his words should count himself lucky to keep his fingers. I am not sure he is right.

Yesterday a fisherman from the harbour came asking for the story of the merchant's daughter, because his wife said it was the only one that made their boy sleep. I had nothing to give him. This morning, though, a small grey bird landed on the sill with a single line scratched across one wing in a hand I did not know, though I recognised it as my own. It read: the sea is wider than any page. Tell them to look up.

So I am sending this by the last of the swallows, which I hope will reach you before the winter ships. Keep my shelf dusted. If you find the sixth quire in the bread oven, do not read it aloud.
