Looping line tattoo down the spine

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare back is shown from behind, with a long, thin vertical tattoo running from the nape of the neck down the centre of the spine. The line is made of small, repeated loops and curls in black or dark grey ink, with fine, even linework. A square of gold leaf sits to the right of the line on the upper back, and the background is a pale, textured wall.

Sit close, the lot of you, because the wind off the moor likes to steal the good bits. You see that gap in the wall where the ivy has given up? That's where the stair once went down to the well, and at the bottom of the well lived Old Annet, who had never once in her life been dry.

Annet spun a thread from the well's black water, grey as the bottom of a pan, and every night she looped it round the stones of the stair, one loop for each thing the castle had forgotten. The lord forgot his oath. The cook forgot her daughter's name. The bells forgot how to ring. Loop by loop the line climbed toward the great hall, and the people who had been forgotten came walking back out of the mist, blinking, asking the way home.

The lord's steward, a man called Brannoc Fell who counted everything twice, decided the thread was theft. He crept down one midnight with his shears and a lantern. Annet was waiting on the bottom step, her spindle still turning. 'You may cut it,' she said, 'but you'll have to choose which loop you want forgotten.' He stood a long while with the blades open. Then he pressed the last square of gold leaf he owned onto the stone between them, as a promise, and climbed back up the stair without cutting anything.

The gold is still there on the wall of the keep, and the thread still runs from the well to the top of the stair. On a cold morning, lay your palm flat on that gold and you can feel which loops are yours. Mind the step. It's worn smooth by everyone who came back to check.
