Orange bloom and script on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A watercolour-style orange flower bloom sits at the top of a black script word, which appears to read as free, with a fine stem running down the skin. The bloom uses soft red, orange and yellow shading that fades into the skin at its edges, while the lettering and stem are drawn in clean black linework. The image is a close, centred shot of the ankle against a dark, reflective background.

The big top's canvas was already dripping when Nell Hardy found the orange tissue flower caught in the generator cable. Someone had painted its petals with dye that bled at the edges, the way the sky did over the Medway at dusk. Her father wanted the Waltzer folded by six. He said nothing about the flower, only that the lorry needed chains and the chains were in the wrong box.

Nell kept the flower in her apron pocket through the teardown. Above the hook-a-duck stall hung a card her mother had lettered years back, FREE PLAY WITH THIS TICKET, and Nell had never once seen the word used for anything but a joke. She had been born in the back of a caravan outside Maidstone, and she had never been free of the fair, not for a single season.
At midnight she walked to the edge of the field where the lorries waited with their headlamps off. She unpinned the card, copied the word onto the back of the flower in thin black ink, and pushed a bent wire stem through its base. Then she planted it in the verge beside the hedge gate, pressing the soil down with her heel the way her mother used to firm the tent pegs.
The fair left without her at seven, its engines grumbling down the lane. By the time the ploughman came past, the orange had run a little into the grass and the word had faded at its edges, but it still said what it said to anyone who stopped long enough to read it.
