Cherry blossom branch on a wrist
Japanese · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A slender black branch curves across the inner wrist, with thin side twigs and clusters of small coral pink five-petalled flowers. The linework is bold and tapered on the main branch and finer on the twigs, with the blossoms filled in flat colour. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a dark red fabric background.

The council man said the cherry had to come down before the wall was rebuilt, so Dad sent me up the ladder with the long-handled saw while frost still silvered the lawn. Nobody else wanted the job. The tree had stood behind the almshouses since before the war, and every April it shed its blossom over the bins and the washing lines as if someone had emptied a box of confetti.

I cut one low limb anyway, a black forked piece, and wrapped its cut end in a wet rag. Mrs Adeyemi from number four watched me from her step with her arms folded. 'It won't flower,' she said. 'Not off a cut thing.' I didn't argue. I carried it home on the bus, standing up, holding it upright between my knees like a flag.
Mum had a jam jar of rainwater on the kitchen sill. I stood the branch in it and forgot about it through the grey weeks of February, the bills and the boiler, until one morning I noticed the twigs had gone pink at their tips. Then the flowers were there, five petals each, opening against the window as though they had only been waiting for someone to stop looking.
I rang Mrs Adeyemi to tell her. She said nothing for a long moment, then asked whether I'd bring her another branch in April. The blossom lasted nine days. When it fell, I swept the petals off the sill into my palm and carried them out to the bare patch where the tree had been, and pressed them into the cold earth.
