Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A sunflower with yellow and orange petals and a brown, shaded centre sits on the side of an ankle. Bold black outlines define the petals and the seed head, with shading in the petals and centre. The flower is shown on pale skin against a light paper-covered surface.

Frost came in the night before the hay wagon. She walked out in wellingtons with a tin of lard and a pair of secateurs, and the petals had gone stiff and rust-edged, the brown disc packed with seed like a honeycomb pressed in a palm. Her father had grown these from a paper packet every summer, the big Russian sort, and he had cut the first head for her mother's kitchen table the year before he died.
She didn't cut it. She knelt in the stubble and watched a blue tit hang upside down from the rim of the disc, shake loose a spray of husks, and go. The sun came over the hedge and lit the outer petals orange, and for a minute the whole head looked as if it had only just opened.
Alec came down the lane on the tractor at eight. She waved him off without turning round. "Leave it another week," she called. "Somebody's having breakfast."
