Realistic jellyfish sleeve on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large red-orange jellyfish with trailing tentacles floats above a seabed on the upper arm and elbow. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the bell and a blue ocean background that fades towards the top of the arm. Colour ink dominates the composition, which fills the arm as a sleeve.

Dear Nell, the tide was out past the breakwater when Harold brought the jar up, and I nearly dropped it. Inside was a jellyfish the colour of rust and boiled sweets, bell as big as a tea tray, and it pulsed slow as a sleeping chest. Old Tam at the chandlery says they only come in when the water warms, and that the bigger ones have been turning up off Pennan since the summer storms took the fence off the sea wall. I told him that was nonsense. Then I saw the tentacles trailing through the weed on the bottom of the bucket, long and ribboned, and I thought of your grandfather's sketchbook with the lighthouse drawn on every page.

We went out again at dawn, the two of us and Harold with his ridiculous hat. The water was green glass, so clear you could see the ribbed sand twenty feet down and a single crab walking sideways across it like it had somewhere important to be. Something drifted up beneath the boat, rose and rose until it was almost lit from inside, and then it simply let go of the surface and sank. Harold said it was going home. I didn't argue with him, which you'll note is a first.

Send word when you can. The gulls are being impossible and the kettle has given up. I am keeping the jar on the windowsill so the light comes through it at noon. It makes a small red moon on the floorboards, and I am learning to sit still enough to watch it move.

Your loving brother, Stan
