Orange owl on a branch on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A man's upper arm shows a colourful cartoon-style owl with an orange body, yellow eyes and blue wing and feather details, perched on a green branch. Around it are a dark cloud, a crescent moon, small stars, music notes, pink lightning shapes and dark round blobs. The shading is soft and watercolour-like, with bright ink tones and no hard black outlines throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl had sung for the miller's daughter every night since the roof of Hollin Brae castle fell in, and nobody in the valley thought it strange until the cloud came down and sat on the wall like a cat on a hearth.

The owl, called Nettle by the washerwomen, perched on the one branch of the old ash that had grown up through the broken chapel window. Each night it sang three notes, and each night a crescent moon climbed over the keep to listen. Nobody had told the storm about this arrangement, and the storm did not care for being left out.

One August the weather came early, black as a bruise, and it wanted the song for itself. Lightning split the ash down the middle and Nettle was flung into the nettles. Ysolde climbed the fallen stones with a lantern in one hand and a fistful of blackberries in the other, because the owl had always said that a song must be paid for in fruit. She hummed the three notes back, slow and steady, until the storm grew tired of being matched and went off to bother the next valley.

In the morning there was a green shoot at the break in the ash, and the owl had a new tune with a rest in the middle, where the thunder had been. Ysolde told the washerwomen it was the finest trade she had ever made. The blackberries were still on the stone, untouched, and when she looked back from the path the owl was watching her with its yellow eyes, as if it had decided to keep one thing for itself.
