Orange poppies and a bee on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large orange poppy bloom with a dark centre and stamens dominates the forearm, with smaller poppy buds and stems rising through green grass below. A small yellow and black bee sits in the upper left of the design. The tattoo uses soft, blended shading and vivid colour, with highlights on the petals and a pale lilac wash behind the flower.

The masonry gave up its last ledge of mortar by the postern gate, and that was where the poppies had come up. You had been told to clear the bailey before the survey party arrived from Carlisle, to take the nettles, the bindweed and the bramble that had swallowed the kitchen steps. Nobody had said anything about the poppies, so you knelt in the wet grass with the trowel across your knees and looked at them instead.

There were seven of them, perhaps eight, each at a different age. The biggest had split its papery hood open on the morning you arrived and now hung its head over the drop to the river, as though it were listening for a boat. A bee had found it before you. It worked the dark centre with the slow patience of someone who had nowhere else to be, and when it lifted away, a gold smear of pollen hung in the air behind it like a question nobody meant to answer.
Mr Haddow from the trust rang at four to ask whether the bailey was clear. You said it was nearly clear. He asked about the stonework, and you told him about the new crack running down the south curtain wall. You did not mention the poppies. Later, with the light going orange across the keep, you walked back along the path and saw that the bee had not gone home. It had settled on the petal edge of the largest flower, folding its wings, and it seemed to belong there as much as the stones did.
In the morning you left the trowel in the shed. The survey could wait a week. The poppies, you decided, could not.
