The snow had been falling for three days when Mei Lan heard the branches creak over the inn's back wall. Her grandmother had kept the inn at the pass for forty winters and had taught her that cedars shed their load in the night, not the morning, so a sound at dusk meant something was moving through them. She set down the kettle and went to the shutter.

Something was coming down the tallest cedar head first, the way a cat comes down a wall it never meant to climb. Its body was long and orange as banked embers, barred black from ear to tail, and the tail hung loose and curled at the very top of the tree as if it had forgotten about it. Snow slid off in sheets. The animal stopped on the lowest bough, level with the eaves, and looked at her with eyes the colour of lamp oil.

Osamu Berg, a tea merchant who had come up from the coast with a mule and a debt, was asleep in the back room. He had told her that tigers did not live this high, and she had told him the pass had never been a place for sensible things. Now she watched the creature test each paw on the bough, claws pale as bone, and understood it was not hunting. It was looking for the warm side of the roof.

She fetched the dried mackerel from the cold store, climbed the ladder and set it on the tiles. The tiger ate slowly while the snow settled on its back and did not melt. By morning the tracks led down the mountain, deep and unhurried, and Osamu swore the stripes pressed into the drifts were the same as the ones on the bark. Mei Lan left the shutter open a crack all that winter.
