A cat sits upright with its head tilted up and one front paw raised, rendered as a silhouette filled with sweeping black tribal-style strokes. The rain had been falling on Saltergate market since before the bells, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would ease. Mother Abbot sold thread and bent pins from a trestle under a torn awning, and each morning a black cat sat on the chandler's step across the cobbles, watching her the way a magistrate watches a man who has already confessed.

One wet Thursday the cat lifted a forepaw and held it up, claws spread, as if hailing a cart. Nobody else looked. Mother Abbot looked, and she understood that the cat was asking for something, the way cats ask, by making you wait. She tore the heel from a loaf, wrapped it in a scrap of green ribbon and carried it over through the runnels of water. The cat ate the bread and ignored the ribbon, then rose, stretched, and walked to the drain grate outside the chandler's door.
Under the grate, caught on a rusted hinge, was a leather purse swollen with rain. Mother Abbot fished it out with a bent pin. Inside were eleven silver coins and a folded note in a hand she knew, the chandler's own, promising a debt to the bailiff that he had sworn he had paid. The chandler's boy came running at the sound of her voice, and the whole market gathered under the dripping awnings to hear the story told twice.
When the crowd thinned, Mother Abbot looked for the cat. It was sitting upright on the step again, head tipped back, looking at a grey sky that had begun, very slightly, to show a seam of pale light. The rain eased by dusk. By morning the step was empty and still wet, and a single black hair lay in the gap between two stones, curled as if it had been holding on.
