Tribal sitting cat with raised paw
Black and grey · Flash
A sitting cat looks upwards with its head tilted back and one front paw raised to the left. The body is filled with bold, tapering black strokes that suggest fur, with a few white gaps defining the ears, face and tail. The image is a stark two-tone drawing with no shading or colour, set on a plain white background.

Mrs Abernethy's cat had sat on the stile at the edge of Hollin Wood every morning since the frost came, and every morning she tipped her head back to watch the rooks go over and lifted one paw as if to stop them. The village children said it was a greeting. Her grandson Tom said it was a bet, because the cat had once lost a fishing sock off the bridge and never forgave the ducks.

Ellen Harrow, who kept the bakery, did not believe any of it until the winter the beech trees came down. The storm took three of them across the lane, and the road to the mill was blocked for a week. Men with saws argued about how to clear it. The cat walked along the fallen trunk, lifted her paw toward the gap in the branches, and sat down again, as though she had settled the matter.
On the eighth morning the saws stopped. The men found a path had opened through the brambles on the far side, a clean line the width of a barrow, where the frost had not settled. Nobody could say whether the cat had known it was there or only liked the sun on that side of the wood.
Ellen still leaves the crusts of the morning loaf on the stile. She says the cat has earned them, and that a village with a sensible animal at its edge is lucky, whatever the vicar says.
