Curled tiger design in black ink

Black and grey · Flash

A tiger is curled head to tail inside a circle, with its head turned to the right and one clawed paw reaching across its face. The linework is bold and brushed, with heavy black stripes and areas of solid ink, and the skull-like form is created by the white paper showing between the shapes. The drawing is entirely black ink on a cream background, with a balanced, centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last takings went into the tin on a Tuesday, and Ada Wyse counted them twice on the wagon step while the tiger watched her from the back of the cage. Forty-three pounds and some coppers. The ring at Skegness had been half empty, and the boy on the ticket table had stopped calling out prices after the second house.

Sultana had been the draw once. Ada's father had sold her to crowds with a painted board of a tiger leaping through a hoop of fire, and the fire had long since gone to ash in the canvas bin. Now the tiger lay coiled in the straw with her head turned away, one forepaw lifted across her muzzle as if to shut out lamps that were no longer lit.

Ada carried a bucket of water and a sack of offcuts to the cage and crouched by the bars. In the dusk the stripes ran together, and the pale gaps along the flank made a grinning hollow in the shape of a head. Her father used to say that circus folk saw death everywhere because they spent their lives in other people's shadows.

The ring had been pegged into the same field for eighteen years. Ada took a stick and drew a second circle beside the first in the mud, then let the stick fall. In the morning she would write to the council about the lease. Tonight she unlatched the gate and sat on the wet grass beside the tiger, and neither of them moved until the lamps in the far caravans went out one by one.
