Orange tiger lily on the top of a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A realistic orange tiger lily fills most of the frame, with curved petals, dark spotting and a yellow-green stamen. The petals use soft shading from deep red to bright orange, and the stems and centre add depth. The lily sits diagonally across the top of the foot, with the toes visible at the bottom edge of the photograph.

Dear Morag,

The tiger lilies came up along the dyke again this week, three days before the boat, which is the sort of thing they do to spite me. You always said they looked like they had been dropped in the dirt by someone in a hurry, all that orange and those freckles, and you were right, but I have stopped minding. Mr Gillies at the shop says the old croft wall keeps the wind off them, and I suppose that is the whole secret of anything that grows out here.
I went down to the pier yesterday to see whether the Lochmaddy boat was running, and it was not, so I sat on the bollard with a flask and counted petals. Six on the good ones. Some have only five, and the spotted throats are dark as wet slate when the light goes behind them. The stamens were already dusted orange at the tips, which means someone has been at them, a bee probably, or the wind doing its clumsy best.
I have decided to keep the bulb Dad planted by the gate, the one nobody dug up after the funeral. I am not going to write you a sermon about it. I only wanted you to know the petals are curling back the way they do when they are finished, and that I can see why you wanted to be somewhere that did not hold still. Come home at midsummer if you can. The boat is running again on Thursday.
Love, Ishbel
