The swallows came back to Gull Row the same week the coal boat limped in with its funnel scorched, and Mrs Ardle at number nine swore they were the same pair that had nested under her gutter for six summers. I didn't argue. I had a room to make up and a guest coming on the four o'clock train, and I was in no mood to be told about birds.

The guest was a man called Tobias Renshaw, who had written asking for the back room on the third floor, the one with the window over the harbour wall. He wanted it, he said, because he had been told as a boy that swallows can find their way home across any amount of sea, and he wanted to see whether his father had been right about that. I did not ask what had become of the father. In a boarding house you learn which questions keep a stranger at the table and which send him off to the pub.
He stayed nine days. Each morning he sat at the window with a flask of tea and counted birds going out over the water, writing the numbers in a ledger with a pencil he kept sharpened with a penknife. On the last morning he came down to the kitchen with the ledger under his arm and asked if I had ever seen the swallows leave. I said every September, same as the tide. He said, "Then they must come back to something," and paid his bill in coins, every one of them counted twice.
The pair under the gutter did not return the following spring, and I have never known why. I still leave the third-floor window open a crack in April. Some mornings I think I hear wings against the glass, though it is only the wind off the harbour.
