Phoenix tattoo across shoulder and back
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large phoenix with a detailed head and long, flowing tail feathers wraps from the upper arm over the shoulder and onto the upper back. The linework is fine and the feathers are built up with soft grey shading and dark accents against the skin. The image is monochrome, with a dark background that makes the tattoo stand out across the curve of the body.

The night the roof of Hollin Cross caught fire, the feathers came down with the ash, black and curled, drifting along the platform as if someone had torn up a letter and let the pieces go. I was the only one still on the books at that hour, sweeping the waiting room with my dad's old broom, because nobody else would take the late shift once the signal box shut.

Stationmaster Pryce wanted the iron ribs written off. He had a clipboard and a man from the council who kept saying the word salvage as if it were a prayer. I kept picking up feathers. They were too light to be coal, and they had a grain to them, like the barbs of a real quill, though nothing in that shed had ever been alive except the pigeons.
On the third morning I found the largest one wedged under the ticket machine, long as my forearm, its edges combed out into fine dark threads. I carried it out to the yard and laid it on the warm bonnet of the shunter, and the sun came up over the Pennines and lit the veins of it silver. Behind me the metal gave a long groan, like a bolt being drawn back.
When the council men came back with their cutters, the roof was standing. Not the old roof. Ribs of new steel curved up from the stone like wings half spread, and along the crown of the arch someone had worked a bird in iron lace, its tail streaming out over the platform. Pryce swore it was a contractor. I didn't argue. I just kept the feather in my coat pocket, and it never once turned to ash.
