Black and grey angel wings across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bare back shows a large pair of angel wings tattooed across the shoulder blades and upper back, with feathers rendered in fine, detailed shading. The wings are done in black and grey with soft gradients that give them depth, and the sepia tone of the photograph softens the contrast against the dark background. A hand with long nails and a ring rests near the left wing, and the head is turned away at the top edge of the frame.

Sit closer, the fire is low and the feathers want warmth. My grandmother's grandmother knew a carver in the river town of Ashur-by-the-weir, a man called Tobiah Quill, though quill was never his name, only what the boatmen called him for the way his fingers moved. He made wings. Not for birds. For the stone angels on the temple steps, and for the priests who wanted their processions to look like something other than men.

One autumn a girl came up from the reed beds with a hawk's wing folded under her arm. She had found it in the mud where the hawk had dropped it, and she wanted to know whether a wing could be made to remember the air. Tobiah laughed, then stopped laughing, because he had made a thousand wings and never once asked that question. He took the feather from her and held it to the lamp, and the light came through its vanes like water through a sieve.
They worked three nights. He cut the shafts from ash, she bound the barbs with thread the colour of smoke, and on the third morning they fixed the thing to the statue and stepped back to wait for the wind off the weir. The stone wings did not lift. But the girl's own shoulders rose and fell, and Tobiah saw that she was breathing as if she had flown.
The priests kept their stone wings and never noticed the reeds had gone quiet. The girl took the hawk's wing home and laid it on her windowsill, where it still catches the morning light, ready to leave.
