Ornamental cannabis leaf on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A cannabis leaf with five pointed lobes is filled with ornate blue scrollwork, leaf shapes and a central motif running down the middle. The lines are solid and the ink is a single blue-purple tone, with no shading or grey. The tattoo sits centrally on a bare back, with a dark garment visible at the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had her grandmother's lace pillow on her knees for three days before she dared to unpick the first bobbin. The pricking card had gone yellow at the edges and the pinholes were soft with age, and the pattern on it looked like nothing she had learned in the Honiton class at the village hall. Five pointed lobes, each one filled with curls and bulbs, with a single ornate column running down the middle like a spine.

"It's a leaf," her aunt said on the phone from Sidmouth, when Nell described it. "Your nan drew it off a seed packet her brother posted from abroad, back when letters took a month. She never made it up in thread. Said it was too showy for the parish church."

So Nell worked it through the winter, the lamp angled low over the cushion and the bobbins clicking like a slow clock. Half-stitches for the scrolls, a plait for the spine, and the fine ground net filling the gaps so the light came through in threads that looked almost blue when the kettle steamed. Her fingers learned the turns before her head did, and by February she could work the lobes in her sleep and sometimes did, waking with a pin still in her palm.

The last pin went in on a wet March evening. She lifted the lace off the pillow and held it against the window, where the streetlight caught it from behind. Every lobe was whole, and the spine ran true from tip to stem. Her aunt would have said it was too showy. Nell pinned it to the glass anyway and left it there, so the neighbours walking past could see what her nan had drawn on a card and never had the nerve to make.
