The bride that year was Nell Garrow, a baker's daughter with flour in her eyebrows, and the groom was a horse-dealer named Tobias Quaile who had sworn on his mother's grave he had never once lied to a woman. Mossop turned his head three ways, the way cats do when they have decided something, and walked off down the lane toward the river with his tail straight up like a stick of barley sugar.
Nell laughed and went in. Tobias didn't laugh at all, and that, my loves, is how I know the cat was right. Now pass the bread and mind the candle.
