Owl and pocket watch tattoo design

Colour · Flash

A teal ink sketch of a large owl perched among pine branches and a pine cone, with an open pocket watch hanging below it. Wispy smoke or ribbon lines curl around the right side of the composition. The drawing uses loose, feathered pencil-style linework with soft shading on the owl's face and body, and the single teal ink gives it a monochrome, sketchbook feel.

The castle at Harrowmere had lost its roof before anyone in the valley could remember, and the only thing still keeping the hours inside it was an owl. Ilse climbed the scree in the last of the light with pine needles in her boots, and she found him on the broken lintel of the chapel window, a gold watch open in his talons, its chain hanging over the stones like a plumb line.

Good evening, she said, because her grandmother had taught her to be civil to anything older than the walls. The owl turned his head right round and looked at her with one eye and then the other. What hour do you want, he asked. She told him it was the hour her brother had gone up the pass in the snow and never come down. The owl said the watch had stopped at that hour and would only run again if someone sat with it until the hour he would have come home. Ilse sat down on the cold step with her back to the wall and the smoke from the valley farms drifting past the empty arches.

She waited all night. The owl did not move except to blink, and the watch ticked in his claws with a sound like someone counting under their breath. Near dawn the hands jumped forward, and far below she heard boots on the old road and a whistle she had known since she was small. But when she stood up the road was empty, and the owl said only, that was the hour, not the man. She understood then what she had paid: a whole night of her own life, given to the watch.

She walked down as the bell in the village began to strike seven. When she reached the house the kettle was still warm on the hob, and her brother was asleep in his chair with his boots still on and a pine cone in his fist, as though he had only just sat down.
