A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last northbound was forty minutes late, and Nell Harcourt had already swept the platform twice when she saw the moon through a gap in the canopy, thin as a paring. She leaned the broom against the waiting room wall, checked the lamp in the signal box, then the one above the ticket window. Her father always said the moon was a lamp someone had forgotten to trim.

He had kept the Cragside junction for thirty-one years and drew its ironwork in the margins of the working timetables: scrolls, leaves, small curled tendrils, the way other men doodled horses. When the company painted the cast iron grey, he scraped a crescent back through the paint with a penknife on the final Sunday before the branch closed, and left a ring of curls around the rust like a lace collar. Nobody had the heart to paint over that.

The northbound came in on one lamp and a smell of hot oil. Only one passenger stepped down, a woman holding a birdcage with no bird in it. She asked whether the stationmaster still lived above the parcels office. Nell said he did not, and that she was the stationmaster now, and the woman nodded as though that was the answer she had travelled sixty miles to hear.

After the train had gone, Nell fetched the penknife from her apron and climbed the step ladder to the window frame. The paint was still soft at the edges. She cut one curl, then another, working toward the tip of the moon, until the crescent opened up under her thumb and the grey flaked away in fine curls. Below her the woman was still standing by the empty bench, cage swinging gently from one finger, looking up at the lamp that had not been trimmed.
