Crescent moon with mandala pattern on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon sits on the forearm, with its inner edge left as bare skin and its body filled with a circular mandala of petal-like shapes. The pattern uses fine linework combined with stippled dotwork to create tonal depth. The image is a close, straight-on photograph against a dark background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The moon bed had been Ruth Abbott's idea, though she never admitted it, and by the second week of August the petals had closed over the gravel so thoroughly that the paths were only a rumour. She had laid it out with a length of string and a tin of lime, ring after ring of cosmos and feverfew, each circle smaller than the last, until the whole thing looked like a rose window sunk into the lawn. Only one side stayed bare. A crescent of rough grass swept round the inner curve, and she mowed it every Saturday without quite knowing why.

Tom from next door leaned on the fence one evening with a cricket ball in his hand. 'You've missed a bit,' he said, nodding at the grass. 'That's not a missed bit,' Ruth said. 'That's the bit the moon's standing on.' He looked up at the sky, which was pale and not yet dark enough for anything to show, and said nothing, which she took as agreement. He had been coming over since the spring, mostly to watch the bees and eat her gooseberries, and she had stopped asking him what he wanted from the garden. He wanted to be let in. She let him.
That night she went out with a torch and a paper packet of moonflower seed her husband had bought the year before he died, the seeds hard and grey as shot. She knelt on the bare curve and pressed each one into the soil with her thumb, counting under her breath. The cosmos around her were folding up for the night, and the feverfew gave off its sharp green smell. When she sat back, the torch picked out the dark disc of the bed, the white rings, and the empty crescent waiting along the edge. By July, she thought, it would be full of light.
